I recently visited Maidstone Services to see the winning poster from my Litter Angels competition take pride of place at the service station.
Last year I invited Year 5 pupils from across Faversham and Mid Kent to design a creative and vibrant anti-litter poster.
The winning entry came from Charlie Foxall from Boughton-Under-Blean & Dunkirk Methodist Primary School. It was fantastic to see Charlie’s poster turned into notice boards around the entrance to the services.
It’s horrid seeing rubbish lying around on pavements and roadsides. It can also be hugely damaging for wildlife and the environment. I hope Charlie’s design makes people think twice before dropping their litter.
We’re taking action on littering in Government by making household recycling easier and introducing our deposit return scheme for drinks containers. And we’re going further with plans to end single-use plastics. But getting litter off our streets is something that needs everyone’s help.
Young people seem to get the need for action better than anyone. I’m delighted that so many primary school children from across Faversham and Mid Kent took part in my Litter Angels competition. It’s great to see young people leading the way in our fight against litter.
I’ll continue to do everything I can to help keep Kent tidy.
