Faversham’s copy of Magna Carta is one of our town’s greatest treasures.
But too few people know about it, and even fewer have actually seen it.
I’m delighted that this is about to change with a new exhibition coming soon to 12 Market Place which will showcase this historic document along with King Henry VIII’s Charter.
This new exhibition will help local residents find out more about Faversham’s past as well as attracting more visitors to our town. I’m particularly keen to encourage school children to come and see the exhibition to help them learn about Faversham’s history.
Huge thank you to everyone involved in helping to make the exhibition possible, including Faversham Town Council and the Faversham Society. Plans to put the Maga Carta on display have been in the pipeline for many years. It’s great to see it finally become a reality.
The final piece of the jigsaw is funding the cost of the insurance to put these historic documents on display. I’m exploring sources of funding for this, including writing to the Culture Secretary, Nadine Dorries MP, to ask about possible Government support.
There is so much history in Faversham. It’s right that we should treasure and celebrate this.
The exhibition is due to open later this year.
