The need for investment in our wastewater network is clearer than ever.
Over the summer we saw flood water pouring into peoples’ homes, and local beaches closed for swimming because of sewage ending up in the sea. This is completely unacceptable.
I’m pleased to have helped secure a £2 million investment in the water treatment works in Faversham. The money will be used to improve capacity, efficiency, and reduce the number storm discharges into Faversham Creek.
I wrote to Southern Water in the summer, following the record fine awarded to the company, to call for urgent work to upgrade our wastewater network.
The improvement work announced by Southern Water is a step in the right direction, but there is still a lot of work to do. In light of the commitments they have given me, I’ll be meeting Southern Water later this year to seek assurances about how and when this money will be spent.
Along with action to improve water quality in our Environment Bill, we have an opportunity to clean up Faversham Creek and protect peoples’ homes.
I’ll continue to work hard to get the improvements we need in our wastewater network to clean up our waterways and protect peoples’ homes and businesses from flooding.
