We’ve been waiting for a new Faversham creek bridge for a long time.
Last week I met the Transport Minister, Kelly Tolhurst, to stress the importance of a new bridge to our town.
As our shops and businesses recover from coronavirus, we need to be encouraging people back into Faversham safely. Getting a new bridge would be a huge boost to the town after these difficult few months.
I’m pleased the Minister has agreed to help secure funding for a new bridge from Peel Ports, the harbour authority.
Funds from local government and donations have raised just over £1.5 million so far. Estimates suggest we still need to find another £1 million for the project.
Securing support from the Minister is another important step. But there are still hurdles to be cleared, particularly cost and responsibility for a new bridge. I’m continuing to work with Peel Ports, Kent County Council and the Town Council to find a way forward.
I was pleased to open a temporary bridge earlier this year to allow cars and people to cross the creek, but clearly this is not a long-term solution.
A new bridge is vital for reviving the creek and preserving Faversham’s heritage as an ancient town and port.
