Councils in Kent will receive an extra £2.6 million in new funding to help prepare for Brexit. This is another step in making sure we’re ready to leave the EU on 31 October.
People in Kent could bear the brunt of any disruption caused by leaving the EU without a deal. This extra funding is vital for making sure we avoid delays at ports and extra congestion on roads.
Kent County Council will receive £1 million, and £1.6 million will be shared between a further 13 local authorities in the county. I’m pleased the Government recognises the importance of keeping Kent moving and has responded to calls for extra funding to help this.
Kent will also get a share of an extra £4 million pot of funding for Local Resilience Forums to help with the costs of Brexit planning.
Much of this extra funding is for contingency planning and ideally will not need to be used. I want the Government to get a deal that keeps freight moving freely across the border because that is in Europe’s interest as well as ours. But it’s responsible to plan ahead and make sure we’re prepared for any outcome.
