Helping people who’ve been handed a raw deal in life is one of the reasons I wanted to be an MP, so I’m delighted to be hosting a jobs fair with the Job Centre to help people from disadvantaged backgrounds find work.
Job-seekers will meet directly with employers who have vacancies. Royal Mail, KIMS, Hilton and McDonald’s will all be represented at the event, which takes place on Friday 23rd July.
Charities like Mind, Maidstone Borough Council and Kent County Council will offer advice and support to employers wishing to reach out to people who may be struggling to find work.
Everyone, whatever their background, should have the chance to reach their full potential. Having a good, rewarding job is an important part of that.
This event will bring together people who’ve been struggling to find a job with employers who can give them the support they need. That will be good for job-seekers and good for local businesses too.
Since 2010, unemployment has more than halved in this area, with just 529 people currently claiming job-seekers allowance. But that’s still leaving some people - often those who have particular challenges finding a job - out of work. I want to make sure everyone who wants to work, can work.
We began planning this event before the referendum, but it’s even more important to hold it now. Britain should do well out of Brexit in the long run but many companies are cautious about recruitment because of uncertainty in the economy. That makes it more important than ever to be holding this event to support job-seekers .
