I’ve been campaigning for better train services for the last two years, and the current consultation on the future of the south east rail network is our opportunity to secure investment and improvements.
A number of constituents have written to me concerned about possible changes to train services from Headcorn and other stations along the Ashford to Tonbridge line. Just to be clear, this is a consultation – no proposal for change has been made, rather the Government is seeking views to understand what people want.
These are much valued, well-used stations. I know people who drive miles to catch trains from Headcorn, for instance. And population growth in and around these villages is likely to add to the number of passengers.
While I know rail users would welcome faster journeys, I would be concerned about reduced stops to valued rural stations. I will make the strength of feeling about this absolutely clear in my response to the consultation – and will press the message home to Ministers if I’m re-elected on 8 June.
