I had an interesting visit to the Faversham Creek Trust, where I saw the work going on to revive Faversham’s maritime heritage and maintain boat-building skills in the area.
Faversham Creek used to be abuzz with boats and barges carrying goods; though that time has passed, the Creek still could be a tremendous asset for the town. At the Purifier building, I saw boat-building in action, with a trainee shipwright learning the craft and master craftsmen, such as Colin Fraik, plying their trade. The trust plans to develop a full apprenticeship scheme.
I also learnt about the Trust’s project, commissioned by the Job Centre, to give opportunities to people finding it hard to get into work. It sounded like this had been a great success. The creek has enormous potential and I’ll be supporting the Trust in its campaign to regenerate it to the benefit of the local economy and community.
