I've been lobbying the Government to put more money into the Broadband Connection Voucher Scheme that allows small and medium-sized businesses in cities to apply for grants of up to £3000 to cover the costs of installing faster internet connections.
The scheme is administered on a first-come-first-serve basis and Kent only recently gained access after successfully arguing that, taken together, the populations of Kent’s towns were equal to a city. The scheme has been hugely successful and as a result the fund is now running low.
I brought the scheme up in a Commons debate on Broadband, you can read what I said here. I also wrote to the Treasury asking them to consider putting more money into the £40 million fund ahead of the spending review.
I'm pleased to say I've now had a response from the Treasury assuring me that they are considering this. You can read the letter by clicking the attachment below.
