The High Court has rejected plans to build an industrial complex at Waterside Park.
I have opposed this development since I was elected – speaking against it at a public inquiry was my first official engagement.
We need successful businesses and jobs in Kent, but Junction 8 – so close to Leeds Castle and the AONB – is not the right place.
As CPRE set out in their compelling case against the proposals, development around Junction 8 will affect the landscape and particularly the AONB. It would also be detrimental to Leeds Castle, which is not only an important part of Kent’s heritage but, as I said in my Maiden speech, England’s finest castle
So I’m relieved at the court's decision.
Maidstone Borough Council originally rejected the planning application. This decision was upheld by the planning inspector, however the developer, Gallagher Properties, launched an appeal in the High Court.
The judge found that MBC’s original findings had been correct and dismissed the appeal.
