On Tuesday 23rd June, Helen Whately MP chaired an All-Party Parliamentary Health Group meeting in the Palace of Westminster with speakers David Behan, Chief Executive of the Care Quality Commission and Miranda Carter, Executive Director of Policy Appraisal at Monitor.
The event brought together parliamentarians from both Houses as well as senior figures from across the healthcare sector. The speakers gave presentations on the roles and aims of their organisations and answered questions on a number of healthcare topics including the future of regulation in the NHS and how this could improve patient experiences by driving both quality and efficiency.
In her summing up, Helen emphasised the speakers’ points about how improving quality also saves money, avoiding readmissions and legal costs, and the important role played by NHS Trust boards in making sure their organisation is able to respond to changes in the health and social care environment.
All Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) are informal cross-party groups which focus on a specific interest area. APPGs are run by members of the Commons and Lords, although many involve individuals from outside Parliament to contribute to their activities.
