The horrific fire at Grenfell Tower has left people angry that this could happen in Britain and frightened for their own safety. We need justice for the victims, and reassurance that everything possible is being done to prevent a tragedy like this happening again.
I have written to the Chief Executives of Swale and Maidstone Borough Councils asking them to confirm that all social housing is subject to the most rigorous safety checks (you can read it by clicking here). If they cannot provide that assurance, I will be pushing for an urgent safety review. I have also asked whether councils have sufficient powers to inspect private rental housing.
I will keep working to make sure my constituents are living in housing that meets the standards we expect in Britain in 2017.
