I welcomed measures to stop lorries fly-parking in residential roads included in Kent County Council’s Freight Action Plan.
People have been putting up with noise, littering and unhygienic behaviour associated with fly-parking for too long – the County Council is absolutely right to be taking action to make more parking spaces available.
The Plan includes proposals for a network of small lorry parks across the County.
Parts of my constituency, were found to have the highest proportion of inappropriately parked HGVs, in a survey conducted by KCC. The survey also revealed that over 700 lorries fly-park every night across the Kent.
Roads Minister John Hayes has said he is “urgently considering… how enforcement against lorry fly-parking can be made to work better” in a Written Statement to the House of Commons. It follows my debate, in which she called for more parking spaces and stricter rules to prevent HGVs parking in the wrong places.
I know the Minister takes this issue very seriously and is determined to tackle it, so I’m optimistic that efforts to ban fly-parking will have the support of Government.”
