Everyone in Britain will have a legal right to request superfast broadband by end of this Parliament, Prime Minister David Cameron has announced.
A new Universal Service Obligation will mean that 10Mbs broadband speeds will be provided on the same basis as essential services like electricity and water.
The Prime Minister, David Cameron said: "Access to the Internet shouldn’t be a luxury; it should be a right – absolutely fundamental to life in 21st century Britain. That is why I’m announcing a giant leap in my digital mission for Britain. Just as our forebears effectively brought gas, electricity and water to all, we’re going to bring fast broadband to every home and business that wants it. That’s right: we’re getting Britain – all of Britain – online, and on the way to becoming the most prosperous economy in the whole of Europe."
I welcome the Prime Minister's announcement, but there is more work to do. Some people in Mid Kent still don't have access to even basic broadband, let alone 10Mbs.
So I've written to the Chancellor ahead of his upcoming spending review asking for more money to be put into Broadband infrastructure.
